When Walter Whittard first set up a store selling tea, coffee and hot chocolate, he had no idea what the next century would bring. In 1886, he opened his shop in bustling Fleet Street with a simple philosophy: to “buy the best”. He blended his tea, roasted his coffee on site, and quickly started making a name for himself with satisfied customers. In 1935, Walter died, and the business fell to his sons Dick and Hugh, who took the helm despite the tough times of the Great Depression and a looming war.
In 1940, a bomb struck the Whittard warehouses during the blitz, and the “Second Great Fire of London” in late December 1940 blew the warehouses to smithereens. Undeterred, the Whittard brothers took up a new home in Chelsea, blending tea using special wooden shovels and using rationing to gain new customers. In 1967, Hugh was killed in a train accident, and in the 1970s, the business became Whittard of Chelsea. Finally, in 1999, they opened a new flagship store in Covent Garden.
Today, Whittard of Chelsea continues to push boundaries with unique, innovative blends and scour the world for the best single-origin varieties. Sticking to Walter’s philosophy of “buying the best”, they create an ever-expanding range of tea, coffee, and hot chocolate.
