What is Pride Month?

Pride Month is a fun celebration that honours the LGBT community or LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and others on the spectrum) community and promotes acceptance, equality, and visibility for all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The LGBT pride month celebrates every individual in the community from gays and lesbians to bisexuals and transgenders, and even those who are still navigating their gender identity and sexual orientation. This event allows them to reaffirm their commitment to equality and inclusion while reflecting on their rights and accomplishments in societal acceptance.

The History of Pride Month

Pride Month and LGBT history dates back to the Stonewall Riots and the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Brenda Howard, a bisexual activist regarded as the "Mother of Pride," organised the first Pride March in 1970 to commemorate the Stonewall riots. It was then called the Christopher Street Liberation Day. This historic event later laid the groundwork for what we now know as Pride Month.

Why do We Celebrate Pride Month in June?

June was designated as the official month for Pride Month celebrations due to its historical relevance to the LGBTQ+ community. A riot broke out on June 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. This uprising marked a historic turning point in the LGBTQ+ community's battle for the gay rights movement and eventually, equal rights. The first-ever Pride March in New York took place a year later, on June 28, 1970, the anniversary of the Stonewall Riot.

Pride Month is significant because it celebrates not only gay pride but the entire LGBTQ+ community, identity, history, and culture. It is a reminder of the LGBTQ+ community's tenacity and grit and a call to action to continue fighting for equality and justice for all. As we commemorate Pride Month, let us renew our dedication to creating a more inclusive and accepting world for future generations.

Happy Pride!
